Abstract

This article presents the contemporary landscape of scholarly publishing, which operates within three distinct models: global publishing oligopolies, the traditionally subsidized academic sector, and predatory journals. Each model is characterized with particular attention to their respective mechanisms of publishing and peer review, as well as the implications of these processes for publication quality and the role of reviewers.

The paper examines the interrelations among these models, including the flows of authors, ideas, and publishing practices. It highlights the risks arising from the dominance of oligopolies, such as the commodification of knowledge, pressure to meet bibliometric indicators, and the exploitation of reviewers’ labor.

Concerning the Polish scholarly market, the study emphasizes the problem of “point-chasing” and the outflow of valuable research to foreign publishers.

The phenomenon of predatory journals is also discussed; by offering expedited publication, these outlets frequently bypass rigorous peer review, thus producing only a façade of scholarly legitimacy.

The author calls for a reaffirmation and defense of Merton’s scientific ethos as the foundation for credible scholarly publishing and peer review.
