Author Guidelines
Guidelines for preparing texts for publication
Format
Files with articles submitted to the editorial office should be prepared in Microsoft Office Word (with the .doc or .docx extension).
Please adhere to the following guidelines:
- font: Times New Roman, 12 pt (main text), 10 pt (footnotes);
- line spacing: 1.5;
- standard margins: 2.5 cm;
- page numbering in the lower right corner;
- text alignment: author's name centred, affiliation (in parentheses), ORCID number, article title centred; main text justified; subheadings aligned to the left;
- paragraphs: the first paragraph of the main text without indentation, subsequent paragraphs with indentation;
- the hyphenation feature is deactivated;
Please limit the use of text formatting, such as: bold, semi-bold, underlining, expanded letter-spacing, etc.
Language of the text
Texts should be submitted in the following languages: Polish, English, French, German, and Russian. Submissions in other European languages may be accepted on a conditional basis.
Information about the author
Information about the author should include:
- author's first and last name;
- affiliation (name of the institution where the author is employed);
- author's email address;
- author's ORCID (if available).
Information about the author should be placed in the header of the first page of the article.
In the case of a co-authored article, the email address of one of the authors should be provided for correspondence purposes.
For authors whose contribution to the preparation of the article was minimal, their input should be acknowledged in a footnote in the text.
Title of the article
The title of the article should contain a maximum of 12 words. The Editorial Board may request the author to modify or shorten the title.
Abstract and keywords
- The abstract should provide essential information regarding the subject of the article (3-4 sentences).
- The article should contain up to 5-6 keywords that refer to the main topics addressed in the paper.
- The abstract and keywords must be prepared and submitted with the manuscript in both Polish and English.
- The Editorial Board reserves the right to review and supplement the keywords to ensure consistency and to enhance the discoverability of the manuscript.
Abstract of the article
The author should prepare and attach an abstract in Polish (up to 1200 characters including spaces) and its translation into English (along with the title of the article).
The abstract should include:
- the aim of the paper;
- a description of the research methodology used;
- the main research findings;
- conclusions drawn from the analyses.
Footnotes in the main text and in source editions
Footnotes in monographic articles and in the part containing the source-critical analysis of the edition should be marked with Arabic numerals, placed at the bottom of the page below a separator, with an indentation at the line containing the footnote number.
When the author includes several publications in a single footnote, they should be cited in chronological order of publication and separated by semicolons. For foreign-language publications, we do not apply transliteration but use the appropriate alphabet and orthographic conventions of the given language (e.g., rules for the use of capital and lowercase letters).
The basic format for bibliographic references in footnotes is as follows:
- for monographs: initial of first name, surname, title (in italics), place and date of publication (all separated by commas, ending with a period). In descriptions of early printed books, the name of the printing house or the printer's name should also be included;
- for cited articles: initial of first name, surname, title (in italics), volume/year number, date of publication, issue/volume number, page number(s) (all separated by commas, ending with a period);
- for cited archival sources: name of the holding institution, name of the record group/collection/series (if the group/collection is subdivided), reference number of the unit, folio/page number (all separated by commas, ending with a period).
Please use the following Polish abbreviations and references: s. [p.], k. [folio], k. 12v [folio 12 verso], k. 45 [folio 45], t. [volume], nr [number], z. [No./issue], przyp. [footnote], por. [cf.], zob. [see], i nn. [et seq.], i in. [et al.], red. [ed.], wyd. [ed./publ.], oprac. [comp.], przeł. [trans.], as well as Latin abbreviations: op. cit., ibidem, idem, eadem. Foreign-language abbreviations are an exception – for these abbreviations appropriate to the language of the publication are used (e.g., Bd, vol., ed.).
For several works by the same author appearing in the footnotes, bibliographic abbreviations are used. The abbreviation consists of the initial of the first name and the full surname of the author(s), 2–3 first words of the title without an ellipsis, and the page number or page range. If only one work by a given author is cited in the footnotes, the abbreviation “op. cit.” is used after the first full citation.
Source editions
When publishing a source edition, the rules established in the relevant editorial guidelines apply. The edition should be preceded by a brief summary of the source content (in italics) and, on separate lines, information regarding its archival provenance (name of the repository, name of the fond/collection, a series name – if the fond/collection is subdivided, a signature/ reference code), and the folio/page range. In source editions, separate numbering must be used for textual notes (starting with “a”) and substantive footnotes (starting with 1.). The author should submit the text containing the source analysis and the edition itself in two separate Word documents.
Quotations
Quotations of no more than 4 lines should be placed in quotation marks and set in roman type. Longer quotations should be blocked from the main text (in 10‑point font, roman type, starting as a new paragraph, with an indent). Omissions within a quotation are marked as follows: (…). Foreign words and phrases should be indicated by italics.
Illustrations
Illustrations should be placed together with their captions at the point in the text where the article refers to them. Additionally, they should be submitted as separate, clearly labelled files in TIFF or JPG format with a resolution of no less than 300 dpi. Illustrations should be numbered with Arabic numerals. The caption should include a description of the object and information about its location/place of storage (e.g., Ill. 1., description, Photo 1., description). The illustrative material must have the copyright issues resolved and permission for publication secured. If the illustrations are protected by copyright, written consent from the author or copyright holder (with a legible signature) for their reproduction and publication must be provided.
Tables
Tables and charts should be placed in the appropriate place in the text of the article, numbered with Arabic numerals, and appropriately described (e.g., Tab. 1., description).

- When citing titles of archival units, titles of legal acts, etc., dates are left in the original version.
- We use the following ways of writing dates: w wieku XVI (in the 16th c.), w roku 1918 (in (the year) 1918); w lipcu 1918 r. (in July 1918); w II połowie XIX w. (in the second part of the 19th c.); w latach 60. XX w. (in the 1960s).
- Cardinal and ordinal numbers from 1 to 10 are written out in words; others are written out in Arabic numerals, with a period after the number in the case of ordinal numbers.
- Numbers of up to five digits are written without a thousand separator (e.g., 1200zł), whereas higher values with more than five digits use a dot to separate thousands (e.g., 12.000zł).
